What Hope Means

Reflections from Our Team

Hope is central to everything we do at HopeQuest. Recently, we invited members of our team to share what hope means to them, along with the Scripture that supports their belief. These reflections reveal a hope that restores, sustains, and reminds us that God is always at work in our lives.

Rev. Bryan Bailey, Campus Pastor

“Hope is… the fuel that helps us move out of our past and allows us to step confidently into our future with joyful expectation.”

Favorite Bible Verse on Hope: But this I call to mind, and therefore I have hope: The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. “The Lord is my portion,” says my soul, “therefore I will hope in him.” The Lord is good to those who wait for him, to the soul who seeks him. – Lamentations 3:21-25 (ESV)

Bob Beard, Chief Operating Officer

“Hope is… confident expectation.”

Favorite Bible Verse on Hope: We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure. It enters the inner sanctuary behind the curtain, where our forerunner, Jesus, has entered on our behalf. – Hebrews 6:19-20 (NIV)

Alison Broderick, Director of Communications

“Hope is… quiet reminders that what is seen is not all that will be. It’s the slightest glimmer of Light amid a vast sea of nothingness; the faintest melody beneath a roaring symphony; the tender squeeze of a baby’s grip.”

Favorite Bible Verse on Hope: Therefore, with minds that are alert and fully sober, set your hope on the grace to be brought to you when Jesus Christ is revealed at his coming. – 1 Peter 1:13 (NIV)

Wayne Carriker, Co-Chief Clinical Officer

“Hope is… the joyful confidence that what we believe by faith can be, is, and will be experienced as true.”

Favorite Bible Verse on Hope: Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. – 1 Peter 1:3 (ESV)

Phil Edwards, Director of Volunteer and Family Services

“Hope means… never having to worry about the outcome of a situation, good or bad, because He reminds us that He has a plan for us in every circumstance we face.”

Favorite Bible Verse on Hope: “For I know the plans that I have for you,’ declares the Lord, “plans for prosperity and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.” – Jeremiah 29:11 (NASB)

Lauren Garofalo, Primary Therapist

“Although we know there is sorrow and pain in this life, we believe God gives us the assurance that in it, through it, and beyond it, there is abundant joy and peace. Because He lives in us, we will one day be with Him for eternity.”

Favorite Bible Verse on Hope: Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that ye may abound in hope, through the power of the Holy Ghost. – Romans 15:13 (KJV)

Seth Harris, Director of Community Engagement

“Hope is… all we have to offer. It gives us the courage to change and points us toward a better life. It moves into the spaces I don’t understand or feel comfortable, where I am stuck or ashamed. Together with faith, hope encourages growth and inspires me to lean in, rise up, and move forward.”

Favorite Bible Verse on Hope: Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. – Psalm 23:4-5 (ESV)

Melissa Haas, Director of Spouse Support

“Hope is… the energy produced by my faith in God that anchors me through the challenges of life.”

Favorite Bible Verse on Hope: Let all that I am wait quietly before God, for my hope is in him. – Psalm 62:5 (NLT)

Jacques Kisula, Development Associate

“Hope is… the glimmer of light that we choose to hold onto amidst overwhelming darkness.”

Favorite Bible Verse on Hope: Even youths shall faint and be weary, and young men shall fall exhausted; but they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint. – Isaiah 40:30-31 (NIV)

Natassha Manzano, Director of Nursing

“Hope is… one of my favorite words because, even in the midst of trials and turmoil, I can still imagine a world in which I overcome and find peace. My hope comes from my belief that Jesus, my Lord and Savior, has already done the work and crushed the head of Satan, and because of that, I will have eternal life.”

Favorite Bible Verse on Hope: Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer. – Romans 12:12 (NIV)

Phil Mitchell, Co-Chief Clinical Officer

“Hope is… both an emotional state and a motivational force. It begins with agency, the belief that with God’s help, I can influence my future; and continues with the ability to envision a pathway toward that desired place.”

Favorite Bible Verse on Hope: “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” – Jeremiah 29:11 (NIV)

Amy Morris, Director of IOP

“Hope means… that even when I can’t see the way or the truth, I can still see the light.”

Favorite Bible Verse on Hope: But this I call to mind, and therefore I have hope: The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; his mercies never come to an end; they are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. “The Lord is my portion,” says my soul, “therefore I will hope in him.” – Lamentations 3:21-24 (ESV)

Justin Paulus, Primary Therapist

“Hope is… faith in things unseen.”

Favorite Bible Verse on Hope: For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. – John 3:17 (ESV)

Kristen Proctor, Office and HR Administrator

“Hope is… knowing that I can press into Jesus when I can’t find my way.”

Favorite Bible Verse on Hope: Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. Through him we have also obtained access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in hope of the glory of God. Not only that, but we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us. – Romans 5:1-5 (ESV)

Michael Renke, Director of Case Management

“Hope means… I do not have to worry about my own works, because it’s Christ’s works which are visible in me. And thank God, because I am not capable.”

Favorite Bible Verse on Hope: I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. – Galatians 2:20 (ESV)

Liz Ruschell, Executive Assistant

“Hope means… trusting that whatever I face, God is working for my good and His glory.”

Linda Whidby, Primary Therapist

“Hope is… tantamount to having received the free gift of salvation. I get to go to Heaven, though I do not deserve it.”
