Addiction distorts our reality. Instead of seeing things clearly, clients may minimize the impact of their behaviors on themselves and on others. Since all of their energy goes towards either pursuing their drug of choice or hiding their addiction from those they love, clients fail to realize how depleted they are physically, emotionally, mentally, and spiritually. In the moment, clients cannot see what their addiction is costing them.
Now that clients are in a safe place and able to think more clearly, it is time to identify and acknowledge the consequences of their struggle with addiction…
An important part of recovery is being able to own what is theirs to own and recognizing what is not theirs to own. Blame-shifting or justifying addictive behavior is never helpful or productive.
