“HopeQuest truly is different!” We never grow tired of hearing this from men and their families. Throughout the coming months, HopeQuest is highlighting the seven pillars that define The HopeQuest Difference. Each pillar represents a defining part of the HopeQuest approach and shapes the way care is delivered to the men and families we serve. For the month of April, we are spotlighting one of the most distinctive elements of HopeQuest’s environment: Our Beautiful Campus.
In April, as we spotlight our beautiful campus as the second distinctive in The HopeQuest Difference, it is worth remembering that the place we now call home did not come together by chance. Instead, it was the result of vision, persistence, and an unmistakable answer to prayer.
Years ago, HopeQuest looked very different.
Before there was a central campus, the ministry operated out of an office park, with client housing spread across multiple residences throughout the area. It worked, but it was never the vision. From the beginning, there was a shared understanding that HopeQuest needed something different. A place that felt safe and peaceful. A place that did not feel clinical but invited people into healing.
As Troy Haas, Chief Executive Officer of HopeQuest, recalls, “The vision was clear: to create a setting that felt like a quiet cabin in the North Georgia mountains, apart from the noise and congestion of the outside world. A place where men could breathe, reflect, and begin again.”
That vision set the search in motion.
For years, the team looked at property after property throughout North Georgia. Each option came close in some ways but fell short in others. Some lacked space. Others presented zoning challenges. Some were too far north to realistically support staffing needs. Over time, the process became discouraging, as though the kind of place they were hoping for might not exist.
Still, they continued to seek God’s wisdom.
Then, in 2007, everything changed with a single phone call.
A friend and HopeQuest supporter, Howard, reached out to Troy, providing an address and asking him to meet there the following day. No details, no context. It was simply an invitation.
When Troy arrived the next day, confusion set in. The location appeared to be a developed neighborhood in the southwestern corner of Cherokee County, before opening onto a dirt road with a gated entrance. At first glance, it did not seem to match the vision at all.
Howard arrived shortly thereafter, opened the gate, and led him onto the property.
What happened next was unexpected.
Howard shared that he had just purchased the house and surrounding land. He explained that God prompted him to reach out to HopeQuest. As they walked the property together, something within Troy began to shift. This was it.
Wooded acreage. Existing homes and structures. A red barn. Room to grow. And, most importantly, a setting that immediately felt different. Quiet. Grounded. Set apart.
It matched the vision in ways that felt almost too precise.
Even the practical barriers that had blocked previous opportunities seemed to fall away. A unique zoning overlay in that part of the county allowed for the work of HopeQuest to take place without the usual complications. What had once been a constant obstacle was no longer an issue.
For a vision that felt out of reach, everything came together at once.
Looking back, Troy describes the moment with clarity. After years of searching and wondering if it was even possible, he found himself standing on a property that met every need. Over time, the HopeQuest campus has become far more than we ever could have asked or imagined.
HopeQuest is more than an addiction treatment center for men. It is a special place that supports the important work happening from within. Walking trails wind through the woods. A creek runs gently through the property. Baptisms are held in a setting that reflects both new life and natural beauty. The red barn stands as a recognizable part of the landscape. And client altars are thoughtfully placed throughout.
It feels like home.
It feels like a place where healing can begin.
It feels like a sanctuary.
That is what makes our beautiful campus more than a visual or aesthetic distinction. It is a core part of the recovery experience. It removes barriers, softens defenses, and creates space for reflection and growth. And it was all part of God’s plan and purpose.
At HopeQuest, healing is shaped by the environment in which it unfolds.
