A Story of Hope:

How Scholarship Support Changed Everything

“HopeQuest truly is different!” We never grow tired of hearing this from men and their families. Throughout the coming months, HopeQuest is highlighting the seven pillars that define The HopeQuest Difference. In July, we are spotlighting the life-changing impact of our nonprofit mission on the lives of those we serve.

For many individuals and families, the need for treatment is clear, but the financial path forward is not. Addiction leaves behind damaged relationships, lost employment, mounting debt, and little to no health insurance. Without scholarship assistance, treatment often remains out of reach. Thanks to the generosity of faithful donors and partners, HopeQuest helps remove financial barriers for qualifying clients.

Kyle understands this reality firsthand.

Growing up, addiction was a familiar part of Kyle’s life. Although he vowed not to repeat the patterns he witnessed as a child, he began experimenting with substances at just 15 years old. Before long, pain pills, marijuana, and alcohol gave way to methamphetamine, cocaine, and heroin. Despite finding freedom from hard drugs eight years ago, alcohol slowly became the addiction that nearly claimed his life.

Kyle cycled in and out of treatment over the years. While each experience offered a glimpse of hope, maintaining sobriety after returning home proved far more difficult. Repeated relapses led Kyle to believe he would likely never escape the grip of addiction. “I accepted the fact that I was going to die,” he recalls. “The sad thing was, I was okay with it.”

Kyle’s drinking spiraled until he was consuming nearly half a gallon of whiskey every day. His health deteriorated rapidly. After being hospitalized with liver failure, kidney failure, and other life-threatening complications, doctors gave him a firm warning: if he continued to drink, he would die. Yet, within days of leaving the hospital, he found himself returning to the bottle. Eventually, his wife reached a breaking point and temporarily left, unable to continue watching him self-destruct. Alone and overwhelmed, Kyle finally agreed to seek help.

After completing detox, Kyle arrived at HopeQuest in May 2025. By then, he had no medical insurance and very limited financial resources. Receiving treatment seemed financially impossible until scholarship assistance helped bridge the gap. “If it weren’t for the scholarship and HopeQuest working with us, I honestly don’t believe I would be alive today,” Kyle says.

For the first time, Kyle experienced a treatment program that gave him the time, structure, and support necessary to address the deeper issues fueling his addiction. He was surrounded by genuine brotherhood, encouragement, and Christ-centered care while doing the difficult work of uncovering the root causes behind years of substance use. Unlike previous programs, HopeQuest challenged him to fully engage in the recovery process and build a foundation that would last long after treatment ended.

On May 19, Kyle celebrated one year of sobriety. He stays connected with fellow HopeQuest alumni, remains active in his church community, and leans on a strong network of trusted friends. He has secured a rewarding career, and perhaps most meaningful of all, he and his wife recently welcomed their first daughter into the world. Kyle affectionately refers to her as his HopeQuest baby – a reminder of the new life made possible through recovery.

Kyle’s journey is just one example of the life-changing impact of HopeQuest’s nonprofit mission. Every scholarship represents a father coming home, a husband restored, a family made whole, and a life transformed by the grace of God. The generosity of faithful supporters opens the door to hope, healing, and lasting freedom through Christ-centered, clinically effective care.
